We've done it! On 28th October the House of Commons approved a strong Climate Change Bill embodying all three of the main demands we have been pressing for over more than three years of intensive lobbying - an increased target of 80% for carbon emission cuts by 2050, annual targets (indicative annual ranges across 5-year budgets) AND inclusion of emissions from international aviation and shipping among those covered by the Bill! Congratulations to all those who played a part in achieving this remarkable victory! The Bill will become law when the Queen gives it Royal Assent, which must be before December. We will be the first country in the world to have a Climate Law, the law will be a huge step in the fight against climate change.
So now is the time to help ensure that the tough new targets can be met by intensifying the ue of renewable engrgy. Today only 2% fo the UK's energy supply comes from renewable sources; however, in the form of wind power, we have the largest renewable energy resource in Europe. The UK committed itself to 15% in discussions on the EU Renewables Directive now in preparation. Our group has already taken part in a Day of Action to get people to sign postcards asking their MPs to urge the Prime Minister to end the Government's current attempts to water down the terms of the Directive as part of FOE's recently launched Renewables Campaign. The next step will be to help shape the Renewables Strategy promised by the Government for next Spring to ensure that it will lead to a genuine, lasting renewables revolution. If anyone feels that they can help in promoting this campaign or getting other community groups involved please contact our Climate Campaigners.
